Most women moved in with one or more children. The majority of the women was between age 31 to 40.

In 30 percent of the cases the perpetrator was a former partner. 10 percent were one or more family members. Almost half of the women had been abused for more than 5 years.

The violence was often emotional e.g. threats or controlling behavior. Other women experienced stalking, attacks in public, financial violence, violation of restraining orders or digital violence.

The majority of the children were between the age 0-4. Almost all children had been victims of emotional abuse or witnessed their mother being abused. 42 percent suffered from physical violence.

The vast majority of enquiries was from women who had been victims of violence (68 percent). Kvindehjemmet has room for 36 women with and without children.
Research project on women at women’s shelters
Kvindehjemmet has participating in a research project together with the women’s shelter Danner and the University of Southern Denmark. The aim of the project was to examine the consequences of violence for women staying at a shelter and follow their development during and after their stay. The form consists of several standardized and validated psychological tests.
Results show that 7 out of 10 women have symptoms of PTSD or complex PTSD when arriving at the shelter. Furthermore, more than every third women still experienced new episodes of violence after moving out. It also underlines the seriousness of mental and emotional abuse.
Empowerment Star – a tool for dialogue and measurement
Kvindehjemmet is using a tool for dialogue- and measurement called Empowerment Star. The tool has been developed by the company Outcomes Star and is specifically designed for women who have been victims of violence. Empowerment Star is a visual tool that puts the woman’s own assessment and development at the center.
